Removing the “r” from February

Ok, I’ve got too much downtime today so I think another pointless post is in order.

Listening to the radio this morning I heard yet another occurrence of someone mispronouncing the word “February”. As is often the case, they had dropped the first “r” in favor of a “y”, resulting in “feb-yoo-er-ee”. In fact, I think this may be the more common pronunciation and I, myself, am guilty of this most of the time. Do to the prevalence of this mispronunciation and the fact that its just so much easier for lazy- tongued people like myself to make the “r” for “y” swap, I think someone should start a petition to have the “r” permanently removed from February. Now I know this can be a slippery slope. If we concede to our laziness too much, before long we’ll all be talking about the “noo-kyuh-ler” crisis the world is in. ;) I have the utmost confidence that we can be responsible English speakers. Who’s with me on this?

Baby Pip Update

Well, it’s Valentine’s Day and no sign of Baby Pip, as of yet. I know, a lot can happen in 12 hours. Maybe she just doesn’t want to share her birthday with Cupid’s day!!

Wordpress upgrade

I have just upgraded the Wordpress system that I use for this blog to V2.1. Many of the enhancements are either behind the scenes or in the admin section ( such as an autosave feature and spellchecker…yesss!), so it looks much the same. Everything appears to have transferred over and is functional but please let me know if there are any broken links or problems.

My first baby shower.

Last Saturday, I attended my very first baby shower. While this is an event not often attended by men, it was a surprise for Jennifer and I had the task of getting her there without spoiling it. I’m pleased to say that she was completely surprised…though she doesn’t like to admit it! I have to say it did present it’s challenges at one point I thought I was going to have to spill the beans. Read on for all the details…

Acting Locally and Electrically

electriccar.jpgAt the recommendation of my dad, I finally saw the highly rated documentary “Who Killed the Electric Car?”. The movie’s premise is that GM was manufacturing and had sold somewhere around 1000 fully electric cars (called the EV1) back in the late 90s. This was due to a Zero Emissions Vehicle (ZEV) mandate placed on auto makers for cars sold in the State of California. It’s alleged that due to pressue by auto makers California rescinded this policy and all of these electric cars, by GM as well as other makers, all but disappeared.
